Essential Duties Telework Opportunity New Hanover County is seeking an experienced Senior Code Compliance Official to join the Building Safety department. This position serves as lead to staff in the Building Code Enforcement Division where duties include assigning and monitoring work, assisting in training; researching codes to respond to inquiries; inspecting new and existing installations in residential, institutional and commercial structures to ensure that codes comply with appropriate standards, laws and ordinances; maintaining accurate records of applications and permits issued; administering state licensing requirements for engineers and architects by enforcing dollar and square footage guidelines for building trades; plan review; and mentoring plan reviewers and field officials in building code. The Inspections division completes over 40,000 inspections per year. Minimum Qualifications Must have ten (10) years of progressively responsible lead experience in large commercial construction, knowledge of state and local building codes, reading building drawings and schematics and assessing damages and estimating repair costs. Must have computer skills, good communication skills (oral & written) and experience in project management. Must be computer-literate and capable of performing inspections and entering field data by using iPads, and using iPhones to perform inspections remotely and communicate with customers, peers, supervisor, and fellow-employees. The ideal candidate will have an NC Standard or Probationary Level III certificate in the area of Building and an NC Standard or Probationary Level I or II certificate in a secondary trade area, preferably Mechanical. Must qualify for Level II NC Standard Code Enforcement Official certification in Building or Level III NC Standard or Probationary Code Enforcement Official certification in Building. Must also qualify for a NC Standard or Probationary Level I or II certificate in Mechanical or Electrical or Plumbing. Certifications in additional multiple trade areas could increase the staring salary. Applicants selected with Probationary level certifications must obtain Standard level certifications within the time frame allowed by the issuing authority. Minimum starting salary commensurate with training/experience and qualifications. Ideal - $46,859 - NC Standard or Probationary Level III Building Inspector Certification plus at least a Probationary or Standard Level III Inspector Certification in another trade area, preferably mechanical. Mid-level - $45,406 - NC Standard or Probationary Level III Building Inspector Certification plus at least a Probationary or Standard Level II Inspector Certification in another trade area. Entry level - $43,999 - NC Standard or Probationary Level III Building Inspector Certification. Must obtain Standard Level I in Mechanical within one year of employment and Level II within two years. Current certifications must be listed in the appropriate area of the application. Licenses/Certifications * Standard or probationary NC Level III Code Enforcement Official certification in the area of Building* Ability to obtain secondary certification Standard or probationary Level I or II Code Enforcement Official certification in a secondary area, preferably Mechanical.* Must have a valid NC Driver's License, good driving record, and own transportation. (if out of state, NC license must be obtained within 30 days of employment) Other Information This position is open until filled. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays, Must be available to work during emergency situations.
