Position Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is one
of five health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry,
Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic
programs at Chapel Hill. The School teaches approximately 600
PharmD students and 145 graduate students. The School has built a
reputation for its continued pursuit of excellence, rigorous
education and training programs, cutting-edge multidisciplinary
research, progressive pharmacy practices, efficient business
operations, and its outstanding faculty, staff, and students. The

Position Summary
The Eshelman Institute for Innovation housed in the nation's #1
pharmacy school was created to forge game-changing new approaches
to academic drug discovery and development.
The role of Scientific Program Manager supports the vision and
objectives of the Eshelman Institute by developing and managing and
advancing the therapeutics grant program. This position provides
the opportunity to deliver analytical frameworks and implement
robust scientific and operational strategies. Major
responsibilities to include:
Research- Administration
* Gather competitive analytics to assess the research and
commercialization landscape from resources such as peer-reviewed
literature, clinical studies, market analyses software tools,
etc.
* Conduct market diligence on all therapeutics project proposals in
advance of funding decisions and to support portfolio management
for funded projects.
* Collaborate with project management team to capture and track
analytics for Institute pipeline activity across disease areas.
Program Administration
* Develop, manage, evaluate, and modify the scientific review
process of the grants including identifying expertise gaps on the
committees, identifying relevant scientific reviewers in
corporations and in the community, conducting outreach and
contracting their services, and training all reviewers on the
software and grant review process.
* Manage the internal team review process, including the reporting
of scientific review results, working with the Executive Director
to make recommendations for which proposals should go to pitch
before the Board, and weighing in on whether grants should be
funded by the Institute
* Utilize Smartsheets for grant submissions and review process.
This process entails creating and managing databases with
information pertaining to reviewers and grant applications.
* Execute all functions of the entire review process including
planning, scheduling, and executing the external team review,
internal team review and pitch day. Preparing any documentation for
these review teams will also be the responsibility of this
position.
* For proposals selected for funding, manage the facilities and
operations team to ensure the award and initial execution support
for all grants which includes notice of award, ensuring transfer of
finances and proper management of budgeted funds, initial hiring of
personnel on awards, etc.
Project Management
* Measure and evaluate program effectiveness. Conduct extensive
research and benchmark other organizations, identify trends,
determine any gaps, and recommend and implement improvements to the
grant submission and award system.
* Facilitate team and workgroup discussions around continuous
quality improvement.
* Work collaboratively with EII team to optimize impact tracking
and assessment of general outcomes that can be attributed to the
Institute.
Communications-
* Serve as the pre-award grants program subject matter expert and
respond to client's requests for grants program related
information. Independently address and resolve complex non-routine
issues that require research and review of policy and
procedures.
* Cultivate relationships with vendors, internal and external
stakeholders. Work collaboratively with individuals, departments,
programs, and offices on campus.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree
equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent
research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or
foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant
experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and
licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Have at least two years of experience in leading and executing
program development and projects with a PMP certification
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Masters degree or PhD
* Three to five years of program management experience
* Science degree
