We are seeking for a visionary architect to lead and drive the
multi-cloud strategy for Virtual Platform Infrastructure (VPI)
team. The team is responsible for the infrastructure that
facilitates interaction between the virtual machine monitor,
virtual devices (Storage, Guest Communications, TPM, UEFI/BIOS,
watchdog, and more) and a host OS.
The architect will oversee our technology currency to ensure
operational resilience and will work with VMware's Principal
Engineers, Senior Staff Engineers, and Product Managers to define a
roadmap that will address business-critical infrastructure changes
needed by our cloud, storage, security and VDI solutions and our
backup and guest OS vendors.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the
first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
Within 60 days of employment, you will have a good understanding of
platform infrastructure and all virtual devices under the purview
of VPI.
Within 90 days of employment, you will be collaborating with
various engineering partners on infrastructure requirements to meet
requirements of VMware products like VSAN/VSAN+, Horizon Cloud,
VMware Aria, Fusion/Workstation, NSX, and more.
Within 120-180 days of employment, you will define the technical
strategy and roadmap for VPI.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments,
requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular
basis?
Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional
strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following
assignments:
Roadmap and Strategy: Define VPI's technical strategy and roadmap
for the next 1-5 years which includes but not limited to the
following: platform infrastructure innovations for our multi-cloud
strategy; and a prioritized list of technology currency to work on
in the short/mid/long -term.
Architecture: This role will drive architecture, infrastructure
improvements and technology currency that will enable more
workloads and applications to run on VMware's multi-cloud platform.
This involves evangelizing what we do in VPI to the rest of the
business groups, so the right engineering collaborations
happen.
Innovations : Drive further innovations within the team to provide
higher availability through monitoring and remediation of VM,
storage, and other virtual devices health issues.
Work Focus: Collaborate with various engineering partners on
infrastructure requirements to meet requirements of VMware products
like VSAN/VSAN+, Horizon Cloud, VMware Aria, Fusion/Workstation,
NSX, etc.
Mentoring : Technically grow the VPI team.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure
and culture of the team like?
The hiring manager for this role is the director of Virtual
Platform Infrastructure based in Palo Alto. Candidate will be
joining a global team that is spread throughout VMware offices
including Palo Alto, Australia, Bangalore, Beijing, Poland, Sofia
and UK.

For US based candidates, the annual pay range (OTE for commissioned
roles; Salary for other roles) for this position is: $171,000 -
$410,000. The actual offer will be based on the role, location, and
individual candidate experience. Bonus, commission, and/or equity
may be eligible for this position. VMware offers comprehensive
benefits including, but not limited to: medical, dental, and vision
plans, company paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time.
